How Deep Learning Happens

Reading
 Mentoring
 and Discussion

At Hilltop Education, we believe education is not just about information—it's about transformation. Our classical approach is built on three pillars that together shape both the heart and mind: personal readingone-on-one mentoring, and group discussion. Each plays a vital role in helping students grow in knowledge, wisdom, joy, and identity.

1. Personal Reading & Reflection

The most foundational learning begins when students engage directly with great books. As they read and wrestle with timeless ideas, they begin to form opinions, discover truth, and build intellectual independence. This quiet, inner work is where deep understanding and a sense of personal identity as a learner take root. It’s also where joy can emerge—when students connect with ideas that spark wonder, challenge assumptions, or stir the soul.

2. One-on-One Mentoring

Mentoring offers students the support of a trusted guide.  Childern will have done the reading ahead of time, and go over the retelling wiht the mentor. In these personal conversations, mentors help students connect what they’re learning to their own life, ask thoughtful questions, and pursue growth in both mind and character. These relationships provide a space of safety and encouragement, helping students develop confidence in their unique voice, values, and purpose. They also correct as appropriate.  Mentoring makes the learning personal—and deeply human.

3. Group Discussion

Group learning brings joy, energy, and community into the pursuit of truth. Through respectful discussion, students hear diverse perspectives, learn to articulate their thoughts, and grow as thinkers together. In this collaborative space, students begin to see themselves as capable, intelligent contributors. Group dialogue doesn’t just sharpen ideas—it builds friendships, identity, and a sense of belonging within a shared intellectual journey.
